The Emilia-Romagna region is characterised
by one of the highest living standard in Europe,
thanks to a performing economy, a special
concern in social policy, a focus in research
and innovation and a lively cultural
environment. The main features of the regional
economy are a big role of SMEs and a model of
polycentric development, which assures a strong
territorial cohesion.
The Emilia Romagna region thanks to a privileged
geographical position get developed by an
efficient infrastructural network for
enterprises and citizens. It has got a motorway
network linking all the cities to the rest of
Italy; a thick network of arterial and
provincial roads; 4 airports and some ports both
tourist and mercantile ones.
So, local economic development in Emilia-Romagna
is the result of a strong entrepreneurship as
well as modern infrastructures and a network of
services. Health, quality of the environment and
social services has always been absolute
priorities in local and regional public
policies.
The entrepreneurship in the region traditionally
consists of SMEs which represent the 90% of
companies working in the regional industrial
estate (more than 400.000 enterprises). Thank to
its excellent performances the Emilia-Romagna
region mentioned by EC as one of more innovative
public development system and received the title
of Excellency for its innovative system in
Stockholm in 2003.
In the region the advanced ICT field supports
the local economic development. In Emilia
Romagna it works effectively ASTER, a consortium
born among the Region, the Universities, the
Research Centres and the Companies to develop
common services and plans and promote industrial
research and innovative methods and products.
Between financial instruments, the PRRIITT
Program offered up Euro 130 MLN for
technological projects, for spin-off and taking
over new Research and Innovating Centres working
in partnership.
Some more public funds originate from the
HI-MECH District created to realise a network of
Laboratories in the Advanced Mechanics field.
