The West Pannon Regional Development Council
founded the West Pannon Regional Development
Agency non-profit company as one-person owner.
The Agency began its activity on the 1st of July
1999 with headquarter in Sopron. In the interest
of the balanced operation in the region, the
company set up offices in the five towns of
county rank.
Its main task is to ensure the work of the
Regional Development Council, as well as to
realize the objects of the Regional Development
Programme. In addition to the decision
preparation and the tasks of implementation, the
Agency plays an important role in the
establishment of the regional "Future prospects"
and it aims to initiate as many people as
possible in the joint thinking and work.
In course of the activity, the Agency
established wide relations of co-operation with
regional, national and international
organisations, it launched many new initiatives,
it applied many strategies, it coordinated the
writing of approximately thirty regional
programme documents and it manages yearly more
billions Forint of competition resources. |

Seven statistical regions were adopted in
Hungary by the decision of the Parliament in
1998. The Region of West Pannonia includes the
counties Győr-Moson-Sopron, Vas and Zala. The
region borders on four countries: on Austria in
the west, on Slovenia and Croatia in the
southwest and on Slovakia in the north. It has
more than 1 Million inhabitants. The territory
of the region is 11 183 km2 that includes 12 %
of the territory of Hungary.
The region West Pannonia has a very high quality
of human resources, a high level of economic
activity and a low level, approximately six
percent, of unemployment. It has a balanced
economic structure consisting of four percent
agriculture, forty-three percent industry and
fifty-three percent services. With respect to
the Gross Domestic Product indicator, this
region is the second most advanced region of
Hungary, after Central Hungary containing the
capital Budapest as well. There is a high ratio
of foreign investment and the automotive sector
is gaining more and more weight, just as the
machinery parts and ICT manufacturing is gaining
share as well. One of the regions most important
values is its various touristic attractiveness
guaranteed by thermal water, the natural
environment which was conserved for decades by
the Iron Curtain, various cultural programs and
its traditional values.
